DIY Ironing Board Cover

Want another crazy project to do during covid?? Why not sew yourself a new ironing board cover!

This is a project that I've been putting off for awhile now, but it was actually super easy.

Step 1: Take the cover off your ironing board. If its 15 years old like mine, you might need to replace the padding also... This step is best done on a messy unmade guest bed. JK, I wish I was a person who had a real workspace...maybe someday...

Step 2: lay your new fabric on a flat surface and flatten your old ironing board cover out on top of it. Cut around the old cover, leaving a 1.5" seam allowance.

*pro tip. If your fabric isn't long enough you can a) bay a new longer piece of fabric or b) patchwork/piece it together as I did.

Step 3: Serge the edges if you can and Turn under your 1.5" seam allowance.  If you don't have a serger, then turn the edge of the seam under. This makes a nice finished edge, but the yarn also has more to get caught on...

You should pin it since there are curves.

Sew it down, 1" from the edge, leaving a 2" UNSEWN gap at the bottom  of the board to tighten your yarn. This means you don't need elastic; you could also use elastic, but 1. I didn't have enough 2. my old cover was made the string closure way 3. elastic doesn't last as long here because its so hot

Step 4: Find a random ball of tie dye yarn and try to untangle it.

Step 5: Use packing tape to make the end a hard needle like end of the yarn.

Step 6: String it through the seam allowance. Put your NEW cover on your ironing board, and pull the string ends to tighten. tie them in a bow (so you can later get it off to wash/use as a pattern for your next one)

and viola!
