I don't wanna go anymore

Feeling terrible for leaving Sophia all weekend. It's one hung to be away from her all day while I'm at work, but this is choosing not to spend time with her :( she's my favorite person in the world and I miss her so much already.

Also, this whole boat thing is a little sketch. And of course it's raining.

Hopefully this trip gets better :(

And the downside to living here

Yes that is a brand new box, purchased from the store mere hours ago, and yes, those little black things are live weevils.

"Eh, Jill, You eating again"?

Just a few reasons why I actually love my job.

Today I bartered the selling price of a goat while attending a meeting about target genomic region correlation.

One of my employees had absolutely no qualms about commenting on my recent increase in food consumption.

By 7 am I had already heard the f bomb at least 6 times.. At a place of business

The mention of "green bottles" was met with a chorus of cheers and "awwrights"

And so far today, no one has made fun of my blond hair, pale skin, or general Haole-ness yet. However, it is only 10:00 am

Nerd alert!!!!!!

Who would have guessed, Daniel's being too busy to mow the grass would be a perfect lesson in genetics. I always thought monocots were boring (because they are-corn included) but the grasses in. Our backyard are actually both interesting and beautiful.
And to continue with the nerd theme, here's a pic of Sophia wearing safety glasses.

Babysitter wanted

I never bought the biggest challenge of living on Molokai would be child care. Well, it is. There is no "daycare" per se. There is a preschool, but minimum age is two and kids have to be potty trained. There are a few people in he island who babysit, but they like to have a set schedule, and they tend to charge a lot because that way people can max out their subsidies.

Daniel works erratically, so this poses a problem for us.

I'm also finding it hard to find someone I trust. I know kids need to learn that they're not the center of the universe, but I just don't see how anyone could possibly have enough love to not favor their own kids over the ones they watch. As they should.but as a parent of kid that needs to be watched, I don't want her to be the least favorite.

Even more completely irrational than that is my fear that Sophia will get kidnapped and drug away to the Philippines where I'll never see her again :( crazy, I know. Literally, that is such a crazy thought, I don't know why I even have it... From watching too many lifetime movies, I guess...

Lucky we live Hawaii

I used to think this saying was so dumb, but after living here for over two years, not only have i lightened up, I actually believe it. Multiple times a day I find myself thinking "lucky we live Hawaii" and truly meaning it.

Yard sale Saturday

Happy to be almost home after a long morning of trying to declutter our lives. Unfortunately we just hopped on to our friends' yard sale, so we ended up buying stuff to. Luckily not as much as we sold though. Sophia had a blast running around playing with the other kids (and their toys) but she got up extra early and was super crabby up until her nap.
Soph passed out in the car, we stopped at Kualapuu to grab some necessities and I bought a head of iceberg lettuce for $4.19!!!!!!!!!
Sigh... The price you pay to live in paradise...

That's just life

It's been a very very busy week from 6 am meetings, to 7 pm dinners it's been go go go all week long. From Danny spending two long days on Lanai,  to having visitors, to losing all of our favorite babysitters. No one ever said being two working parents would be easy, but two working parents on Molokai has it's own special set of challenges. Just a FEW of the trials and tribulations we've faced this week.

The Natural Foods Store is out of probiotics....and has been for almost two months. I honestly don't think I'm ever going to be able to buy them ever again. Oh well.

The regular grocery store only had skim and whole milk this week...I just wanted a gallon of 2%!!!

On a more positive note, here are some adorable pics of Sophia playing with the baby chicks:
Still a little apprehensive
Determined that SHE needs to feed them
And a mommy and me shot

i can't believe how hard it was to buy an iphone!!!!

Today marks a big day for the world's most accident prone person. I bought an iphone, it took over an hour, and i don't know what my phone number is because we live in Hawaii, but oh well....

It should be here on Friday and I really hope it works :)

Baby Chicks!!!

This Saturday I woke to the sun blaring in my eyes, got up, and went to the living room to check my facebook and watch Food Network (I love Trisha Yearwood!) anyway, Daniel comes grumbling down the hallway about an hour later "What's all that noise, why didn't you feed the animals?"

Well, I din't feed the animals because I'm lazy, and I'm so used to the noise of a million chickens squawking since we moved to Hawaii, I honestly didn't even notice it. But as it turns out, this particular Saturday, it wasn't even our animals.

On the back lanai, not one, but FIVE baby chicks had gotten stuck in a mouse trap. 4 nitrile gloves, a scissors, an exacto knofe and some blue Dawn later, we had 5 new babies to take care of!
They're so tiny and cute!

I thought Sophia would LOVE them, but she was unimpressed (and a little scared)

Friday night is cookie night

Last Friday we had relay for life, I came home from work an hour early with hopes of making some bad ass M&M cookies to get us through the night. Long story short, tried a new recipe, forgot one of the ingredients, made a huge mess and ended up throwing it all to the chickens and dog.

This Friday went much better! Another new recipe, along with some awesome tips from a link I found on Pinterest,  here.

They are good, and perfect for our beach day this afternoon!
Soft, chewy and delicious! Made with our own eggs!

Relay for Life today!

Who knew deciding what cookies to bake would be so hard? I couldn't find my trusty "good cookies from pinterest" recipe that's usually stuck on the side of the fridge. (this is why i should never even attempt to clean our house...) So we're trying something new today.

Mix all these items together in the KitchenAid
1 cup sugar
1 1/4 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup canola oil
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
2 eggs
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
a crap ton of M&Ms

Bake at 350 for 10 min
Realize you forgot baking soda, add baking soda to the rest, decide which recipe was better. UUGh. Typical day in this kitchen.

They stayed puffy in little gross balls. FAIL:(

But, RELAY was still fun!Photo: Reading time...
